Thief launches carpark attack on 87-year-old
By Joel Maxwell

Broad daylight bag snatcher follows 87-year-old to her car then strikes. A thieving teen?s attack on an 87-year-old woman in Petone?s Pak N Save carpark has left police appealing for information to catch the crim. Senior constable Andy Smith said the woman was left shaken after her handbag was ripped out of her hands as she hopped into her car in broad daylight on Wednesday last week. ?When she?s got into her car a young male has opened the passenger?s door and stolen her handbag. ?She?s held onto the strap and he?s managed to break the strap and take off.? Mr Smith said the teen jumped the fence at the corner of Pak N Save near Briscos then ran up Jackson Street towards the Shell petrol station. The boy was Maori of slim build aged between 14 and 16, wearing a grey top with dark trousers and a dark peaked cap. ?He was running at a fair clip up Jackson Street,? Mr Smith said. He said police were interested in hearing from a European man and woman walking past the Jackson Street TAB at about 11am. ?This guy would?ve run past them ? if they could recall where he went to or anything about his description that might assist us it would be great.? Mr Smith said the 87-year-old lost a black leather handbag holding everything from her wallet ? without cash ? credit card, driver?s licence and senior citizen?s card. ?She was very shaken up ? we referred her to Victim Support. ?Not a nice thing to happen to elderly people.? People with information can call Petone police 494 8400.
