Train commuters will be able get timetable facts at the flick of a fingertip from this week with a new regional council text message service. The texts, costing 20c each, are part of the Greater Wellington Regional Council?s txt-train service. Commuters can send a text message to 876, or TRN, with the first four letters of the station they are departing from and their destination. They will get a reply with their next two scheduled departure times. Commuters can also get information about scheduled trains up to 23 hours ahead. Transport and access committee chairman Peter Glensor said the new service is another step towards making public transport easy and convenient. ?The easier public transport is to use, the more inclined you are to use it. ?I?m a great fan of the txt-bus service so I?m delighted that there?s now a similar service for trains. ?It is so easy to use and means that if you?re out and about with no access to paper timetables or computers, you can still get the necessary information to plan your travel.? To celebrate the launch of txt-train, Metlink is giving away one free monthly train pass per month from November to January. All commuters have to do is use txt-train to go into the draw automatically. For information go to www.metlink.org.nz,
