Council to survey Hutt about needs of the elderly

A working group to help Hutt?s growing number of elderly is being set up by Hutt City Council. The Aging Together working group will comprise government and community groups, and individuals, and will work on a strategy to run the council?s projects to help the elderly. The first act of the group will be to survey Hutt people to find out what problems face the elderly and what their priorities are. It is understood the survey will be held in early 2009 and the results will help the group devise its Aging Together strategy to be presented to the council with projects earmarked for spending. The council has launched the group as it faces an aging Hutt population. Statistics New Zealand?s population projections show that over the next 20 years the number of people in Hutt aged under 40 is set to drop by 8,600. The number of people aged over 65 is projected to increase by 8,300, raising the number from 11,000 to 19,300 by 2026. People or groups interested in joining the working group, expected to have up to 15 members, can contact the council. The closing date for registration of interest is November 14.
