Bowls NZ works on numbers game

I was interested to read the reports in...the Petone Herald of the demise of the Petone Bowling Club and the Inside Banter by Tim O?Connell. Whilst a certain amount of the comments about the future of the sport are true, I feel comments like ?offers little optimism for the future? and ?if there is no way to attract the necessary numbers?even amalgamation may be a lost cause? are misleading to your readers.? Currently there are approximately 50,000 members of bowling clubs in NZ but there are in excess of 43,000 others who also play bowls on a casual basis.? It is a researched fact that the majority of people these days do not wish to be members of sporting clubs but simply wish to pursue their leisure activities in their own time, playing at a time which suits them best, and playing with family members or persons of their choice.? Unfortunately this does not fit with way bowling clubs have traditionally organised themselves. Amalgamation or mergers of bowling clubs is certainly one way of ensuring the sport continues to have strong sustainable clubs and it is a well known fact that there are far too many bowling clubs in the country with critically low numbers ? the Wellington region is no exception. Bowls NZ have been aware of this issue for some time and are working toward establishing strong sustainable clubs and this includes ensuring clubs are geared to include in their programmes activities for the casual bowler.? In this latter respect Bowls NZ have established a summer league especially for non bowling club members ? named Mates in Bowls (MIB) it gives participants the opportunity to enjoy themselves on the greens with their own mates and other non bowlers.? To date there are 60 clubs throughout the country who are running the MIB programme and further information can be found by visiting the website www.matesinbowls.co.nz. ????
