Hutt Olympic hero Nick Willis and an elite field of international runners set to line up for the Jackson Street Mile Getting Nick Willis and an elite field of fellow runners was the easy part ? now the organiser of a planned mile run in Jackson Street faces the difficult task of finding sponsorship. As reported in the last edition of the Petone Herald, Petone man Aaron Cardie floated the plan to hold a one mile event in Petone?s main street.? Now Cardie has met Willis and Athletics New Zealand CEO Scott Newman to pitch his plan for a one mile event in March, featuring Willis. While the meeting proved fruitful he is wary of what lies ahead to make his dream a reality. Willis has used his contacts to gain interest from some of the world?s top milers, 1500m and 800m athletes. The next step is more difficult. In order to ensure the best field possible for the event, Mr Cardie has set a target of $10,000 to cover the prize pool. ?It?s all about getting the carrot to dangle in front of these guys now.? He is also seeking sponsorship for the athletes? accommodation and airfares. Should the cash be raised, Cardie said Willis has all but guaranteed the attendance of the world?s top miler in 2008, Britain?s Andrew Baddeley. As well as American runners Matthew Tegenkamp and Chris Solinsky, Baddeley is understood to be coming to train alongside Willis in Lower Hutt around March next year. The race is pencilled in for a twilight start during the week on either March 24 or 25, which fits in with high profile athletic events in Melbourne and Wellington around the same time. ?The main event will consist of between 15 to 20 elite runners, with a combination of top Kiwi and international runners. In the meantime, Cardie is focused on rustling up support from the local community, in order to ensure the village can create another piece of history in Hutt. ? "There's a fantastic opportunity here and it would be great if the business people of Petone could get right behind the event as it has the potential to be a special event. ?I would love to see a local business come forward to buy the naming rights and gain national coverage for themselves and Petone, and of course see Nick win in his own backyard"
