Councils too close to Exide?

Hutt South Greens candidate Virginia Horrocks has called for Petone?s Exide factory to find a new home and slammed the Hutt and regional council for being too close to its owners. She pointed to new US lead air standards and said they should be enforced by Greater Wellington Regional Council. ?It is very doubtful that the ageing factory operated by Exide will be able to meet such standards,? she said. ?Wellington Regional Authority and the Hutt City Council need to inform themselves about the health reasons for the new standards and adopt a timetable for their implementation in New Zealand.? Horrocks said an Exide newsletter for the area about its operation that included information from both councils was evidence that they were too closely associated with the company. The regional council has twice prosecuted Exide for breaching its consent for lead emissions since the limits were set in 2006.
