The Petone Lions Club has played an active role in the community for the past 48 years
In The Petone Herald 18 January 2010 it was inadvertently suggested?the Petone Lions Club was no longer active. We sincerely apologise for publishing false information. The Petone Lions Club has played an active role in the community for the past 48 years, with the club?s membership increasing over the last few years. Lions members helped bring last weekend?s Aurora Harrier Club?s Annual Hutt River Trail to fruition, taking charge of marshalling and drink stations. ?Without the Lions we couldn?t manage it, the nature of the event means it takes a lot of people on the day to make it function,? says Aurora Harrier Club president Ian Priest. On Saturday over 120 people participated in the Hutt River Trail run and walk event, with about half the field completing a half-marathon from Moonshine. ?Some people travelled for long distances to be here, one guy from Hong Kong. ?It?s the appeal of the route being off-road, 16 people were down for the 60km leg from Wairarapa, including the guy from Hong Kong,? Mr Priest says. The event relies on volunteers and three local Lions clubs assisted. Petone Lions played a lead role in supporting the event and is building up to hosting a Lions District Convention in March. Petone Lions Club president Nalini Naidu says the convention?s theme ?Unity in Diversity? reflects the club?s diverse membership and the distinct history of Petone. Over 300 Lions members from 63 clubs will attend the three day event to be held at the Petone Workingmen?s Club. ?All the clubs in the Hutt will be involved and we are leading the event, we put a bid in a year ago and we want to show them the Petone community and our involvement. ?We are calling it the settlers convention, with the theme taken from the Petone area, for all the different people who have settled here, and the fact our club is made up of many different ethnicities,? says Mrs Naidu.
