Celebrating Petone?s sporting legacy

2010 is a big year for Petone sport. The Petone Rugby Club is holding its 125th Anniversary celebrations in May and the Hutt District Cricket Club will celebrate its first 100 years over Easter Weekend. The Petone Rugby Club was founded in 1885, three years after the Gear Meat Company opened and three years before Petone was proclaimed an independent borough. The Club has produced 30 All Blacks and 16 NZ Maori representatives. Club spokesperson Wayne Smith says the celebrations will be a fantastic event. ?The same person who founded Poneke Rugby Club founded Petone two years later, that is why Poneke hosted us for their 125th and we will host them for ours. ?On the day matches will be held against Poneke and a selection team with some big names from the past will play a Ken Gray Academy side,? says Mr Smith. As a build up, the club is hosting ?Petone Man 2010? on 13 February, which will be a challenge for the men?s open and the ?Puku Pacers? in the slower category. A new section is open this year that will allow College students to compete against each other. The extremely popular 'Petone Kid' will see the clubs juniors get out there for their Run, Swim, Bike Triathlon. The Hutt District Cricket centenary celebrations fall on the same day as the senior club cricket final in Petone. ?It had to fall on the day of the finals, right? We are going to play out of our skins to be involved in the final for our celebrations,? says Hutt District Cricket spokesperson Andrew Hadley. The Petone Recreation grounds will host the senior club cricket finals, and if the Hutt Club does not make it to the finals they will play an invitational match at the grounds. Hutt District Cricket Club was founded in the 1908-09 season and has won a number of championships over the last 100 years. The Club also has a proud tradition of representation in the Women's competition, two day and one day grades and at junior level. Both clubs encourage anyone who has been involved with them over the years to get in touch.
