Red lights could be seen from Wellington City, and ambulances and police motorcycles jostled with crawling commuters as a fire on the Petone foreshore brought the village to life last Wednesday night. It is understood that the blaze broke out on the fourth floor of the Securit-ease building in the Petone Esplanade. While the extent of the damage was not known as the Petone Herald went to press, the cause of the fire is understood to have started by from a switchboard overheating in the office building. The alarm was raised at around 5pm and staff promptly evacuated the building. At the height of the blaze, up to thirteen trucks from the region were employed to bring the blaze under control. Emergency services closed the Esplanade to motorists - further slowing the rush hour traffic along State Highway 2. The fire was swiftly extinguished and staff were able to return to collect their possessions at 6:25pm. ? National radio news outlets placed reports on the fire at the head of their bulletins, declaring a major blaze on the Petone foreshore. However, when the Petone Herald spoke to a firefighter at the scene, a frank account of events was given. ?Oh, there was definitely a fire, a fair bit of smoke billowing out, but the boys put it out.?
