From the Lions to the Lions-Riki?s seen it all now
By Tim O?Connell

Already famed for producing some of the finest provincial and All Black representatives, Petone can now add British Lion on their honours board. It has been a rapid rise through the ranks for Riki Flutey since leaving New Zealand to further his rugby ambitions in 2006. The former Petone and Wellington utility back has gained selection for the upcoming British Lions tour to South Africa later this year. The 37-strong squad is made of only eight English caps, including Kiwi- born Flutey, with Ireland and Wales providing the largest proportion of the touring party. In doing so, he becomes the first person to play for and against the Home Unions side, after taking the field against the ill-fated 2005 tourists at Westpac Stadium. Although showing sufficient skill and power to warrant selection for the Wellington Lions, the Hurricanes and the New Zealand Maoris, frustration at a lack of regular game time led him to seek opportunities elsewhere. Since then, the 29-year-old has thrived in the northern hemisphere rugby environment, being named most valuable player last year by his Wasps club in the equivalent of Super 14 in Europe, the Guinness Premiership. Then in 2008, after having already met his UK residency requirements, Flutey gained selection for the England squad against the Pacific Islanders at Twickenham on November 8. Petone faithful have been quick to praise their former son?s achievement. A post on the club website commended him on his dedication and pride, which will no doubt be evident in the republic come June. ?Flutes was a real club man when he was at the Club and played to his best every time he pulled on the famous Petone jersey, he now gets to pull on the famous Red one.?
