Pencarrow Rotary welcomes a fine set of speakers
By Tim O?Connell

A riveting and diverse roster of speakers will take to the rostrum at Eastbourne during the month of May, offering enlightening insights into some very hot topics. Rotary is renowned for its work amongst the community, including speech competitions for young adults and students. However for the Pencarrow chapter, weekly meetings have been privy to some enthralling lectures on a variety of important issues, with many more planned for the months ahead. The East harbour-based branch of the organisation has enjoyed talks from Dr Paul Quigley of Wellington Hospital regarding New Zealand?s ongoing problem with alcohol. Retired Detective Inspector Peter Weldon also gave a thrilling account of his work experiences in the UK with his presentation entitled ?A Study in Murder?. The final weeks of autumn bring three more distinguished guests to their meeting place at the Lowry Bay Yacht Club to give presentations on a range of interesting subjects. On successive Mondays, those attending meetings will get to see Parliamentary Environment Commissioner Dr Jan Wright discuss climate change, as well as Judge Andrew Becroft of the Youth Court demonstrate the path of young offenders into adult criminals. Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar at Victoria University Maya Peipui concludes May?s speaking schedule with a presentation on her life in Papua New Guinea. Secretary Mark Rutherford said that Pencarrow Rotary had been incredibly fortunate with the high calibre of speakers they had attracted of late, providing plenty of stimulating discussion at recent meetings. He added that the search for speakers does not need to be terribly extensive, either. ?We?ve had some great speakers lately, and what?s really great is that some of them live locally around Eastbourne here. ?The people that have been organising the speakers have done a great job getting hold of them.?
