WelTec students have joined forces with local social housing company Urbanplus

New homes by local students

WelTec students have joined forces with local social housing company Urbanplus to provide new and improved homes for social housing tenants in Lower Hutt. The innovative partnership sees WelTec students and trained apprentices working on improving the existing 22 homes and building four new ones at the Urbanplus housing complex in Bell Road, Waiwhetu. Hutt City Mayor David Ogden says he?s delighted to see two locally based organisations working together to provide benefits to other Lower Hutt residents. ?When we set up Urbanplus we did so with the aim of improving the existing housing stock and increasing the number of social housing units provided in Lower Hutt from 186 to 210.? This project meets both those aims and it is fantastic seeing this come to fruition.? WelTec Executive Dean, Alan Peck says he is pleased that WelTec is able to partner with Urbanplus to provide housing for local social housing tenants.? ?Our Pre-Trade Carpentry students are currently working on WelTec?s building site building the houses to a stage where they can be transported to their final location. We also have WelTec apprentices enrolled in the Carpentry Cadetship programme, undertaking site works and refurbishment on the Hutt City Council building site. ?In the past, our students have built houses as part of their training which have been tendered and sold on the open market.? We are now extremely pleased to be working in partnership with Urbanplus to provide houses for the Hutt City Council and people in need in the community.? Urbanplus CEO Richard Conway says it?s great to be in partnership with WelTec on this project.? ?Not only are we getting a top quality product we are also part of providing a valuable work experience to these students and apprentices helping them get their feet on the career ladder.? Mr Conway says these students and apprentices will be working alongside professionals who have been engaged on the project to provide architectural, legal, plumbing, drainage, electrical and landscaping expertise.
