A barrel of laughs and cash at Quiz Night

Q: ?What was the Prime Minister?s name in 1970?? A: John Key. This was one of the questions that stumped participants at Manguraki?s successful annual quiz night held in early September. The Maungaraki Community Association organised the event, which exceeded expectations and raised enough money to pay-off the community hall?s new speaker system. The association guaranteed payment of the school hall?s sound system after last year?s quiz night, and the $1800 raised on the night has all but paid off the $4000 price tag. ?The community did themselves proud,? says Maungaraki Community Association president Rick Mooney. The aptly name ?I Don?t Knows? team, including the local Baptist Preacher, drew with the ?Odd Shaped Balls? school board team, including Hugh Frostick. On a count back the ?I Don?t Knows? won through in the end. ?It went really well, we had a record number of 20 teams and over 120 people involved,? he says. The large numbers of attendees were not only Maungaraki residents, as many residents from surrounding suburbs took part. ?Everyone was well behaved and the sponsors of the evening really helped out,? Mr Mooney says. Local businesses got behind the event and supplied spot prizes, raffles, and auction items for the winning teams. The speaker system, with a portable microphone, made a debut for the association on the night and is frequently used by the school. ?Next year we are hoping the event will be even bigger,? says Mr Mooney.
