A new route for the 2008 Pelorus Trust Fun Run caused confusion for some competitors who took a wrong turn causing a controversial finish. Almost 900 competitors were involved in the half marathon, 10km and 5km run and walk, which was held in Petone. Race director Trish Collett said there were teething problems with the new course, with a couple of competitors taking an accidental short-cut. The route was changed to the Petone foreshore and Hutt River trail in order to make it safer and more picturesque. Ms Collett said everyone from school children to the elderly had a go at the race, and everyone enjoyed themselves. ?It?s a real family event, so its lovely - mums, dads, kids.? The most popular race was the 10km run and walk. Fiona McCrudden has been competing in half marathons for the past twenty years. She was pleased at completing the 21km distance in at time of 1 hour, 40 minutes, even with a few niggling injuries. ?I really enjoyed it ... the course itself was very scenic, with twists and turns.? First-time walker Helen Rushton completed the 5km race with her husband, John Rushton. The Hutt woman said she was feeling pretty good after the race, other than slightly sore calf muscles. She hopes to walk it again next year. ?It keeps us honest on the weekend.? Matthew Pavitt won the male half marathon in a time of one hour, 19 minutes. Lizzie Middleton, the female winner of the half marathon completed the race in a time of one hour, 28 minutes.
