One year of fundraising pays-off

Britannia House started the year with a wish list that included building a new wing and deck, purchasing a van with a hoist, new kitchen facilities, and renewing the weatherboards. A year of non-stop fundraising has brought most of the list to fruition with the new suite finished mid-year and the weatherboards being re-clad last week. Britannia House Trust chairperson Maureen Freeman says fundraising continually has been difficult but the outcome is worth it. ?We started in earnest a year ago and in some aspects we have really extended ourselves. ?We are feeling very proud with all we have done this year,? says Mrs Freeman. $30 thousand has been raised towards the van with assistance from Petone Rotary and Pub Charity. The Britannia House Trust will now put up $42 thousand to purchase the $72 thousand dollar van so current residents can enjoy its benefits. ?We are half-way there ... but the sooner we fundraise for the second-half the better because we will be paying interest on half the cost. ?We have a sizable presence at the [Petone Rotary] fair and would really appreciate any help we can get,? she says. The trust is asking for donations from the community for their stall at the Rotary Fair. A new 50-inch flat screen television has recently been installed in the home that creates a ?more social setting? for residents to watch favourites such as sport, coronation street and discovery channel. ?The Petone Community Board also funded a new wall oven for the kitchen that cost $2,000. ?In one year we have made a lot of headway, it has been very encouraging The community retirement home offers day-care for elderly people and has spaces available. They are holding a Christmas afternoon tea on the 13 of December and invite the community to attend. What are your views? Do you have any fundraising projects that could feature in the Petone Herald?
