The Northern Courier caught up with Charles Chauvel Labour list MP who was re-elected to parliament last November and was placed second in the Ohariu electorate to discuss his first few months in office, achievements and future plans. Mr Chauvel said he has enjoyed the sense of community in the region, and the good feeling in helping constituents has been a real joy. ?With such a diverse range of new and older communities across the electorate, from Tawa to Crofton Downs, Ohariu to Maungaraki, there is such a vibrant feeling that creates smiles on people, even in tough times,? he said. The opening of his office in Johnsonville Road has been a high point?and a positive step which allows people to visit on weekdays and discuss their issues. ?I am also very keen to hear the views of people in the region.? As Labour spokesperson on Energy and Climate Change, he has been?working to bring?people?s attention to issues which are important for our future such as the development of bio fuels and achieving a sustainable energy future. ?Recently I went to the opening of Meridian?s wind farm at Makara, which I voted to support when I was deputy chair of?Meridian back in 2004.? Plans for the immediate future include ?a member?s bill in the ballot on regulating loan sharks who are the scourge of our communities,? which Mr Chauvel said he feels very strongly about. He is keen to contest the seat in 2011 which looks to be an important election. ?Obviously, Peter Dunne has?been?the member for Ohariu for a long time, but I believe that the new century requires not just a commitment to the people of Ohariu, but also a vision for the future.?? ? I am keen to hear peoples? views?and?I?think it is important?to celebrate?the?successes of?people?and groups in?the community. ?
