PCC paying for a dream

Scholarships look to make the aspirations of young locals just a little more accessible. With the deadline for Porirua City Council?s $300 scholarships for young people fast approaching, those seeking a monetary boost to their ambitions are being asked to make haste. The scheme is open to young people residing in Porirua aged 12-24 years, in an attempt to give a small kick start for those in the area who may otherwise miss out. ??????? The council's Youth Advisory Group will fund ten young people in a range of endeavours, with priority given to young people who need financial support in order to reach their goals.? Aside from the age and residency restrictions, there are few limitations on what candidates may apply for. However, cash will not be given to young people nor will funds be awarded to pay for tertiary fees. Instead, YAG will purchase items on behalf of young people up to the value of $300. One scholarship will be given out to a young person experiencing financial hardship. The rest of the recipients will be drawn from young people who display talent and commitment in the fields of sport, music, art and academic pursuits. Consideration will also be given to those who show outstanding leadership or community service qualities. Applications must be submitted to the PCC by 15 May 2009. Subsequently, all entries will be narrowed down to a short list of applicants who will be asked to present a verbal presentation to YAG at an evening meeting during Youth Week which runs from May 25 to 29. Successful applicants will be advised of YAG's decision as soon as possible following this meeting. Entry forms can be obtained from the Porirua City Council by calling Awhina Buchanan on (04) 237 1613 or email
