Hutt River ride attracts all ages

Cyclists of all ages took advantage of good autumn weather recently with almost 1000 getting on their bikes for a ride alongside the Hutt River.

The Bike the Trail ride had been scheduled for early March but was postponed late April due to the weather bomb that struck Wellington.

Thomas Buchanan from Hutt City Council said an estimated 1000 riders chose to ride the full 25km course from Rpper Hutt's Harcourt Park to Hikoikoi reserve in Petone, although some chose a shorter 12km course starting in Stokes Valley.

“It was very easy ride. The average time was between one-and-a-half and two hours.”

He says there were a few four-year-olds, while the oldest was 73. “She said she couldn’t walk but was able to ride a bike.”

As the bikers arrived in Petone they were greeted by the smells of a BBQ and the sounds of a band.

Mr Buchanan says the event was a big success. In 2013 it will return to its traditional date in the first weekend of March.
